ABOUT OUR CLUB
Considering we are only a small club and lack any dedicated facilities, our athletes punch well above their weight at regional competitions. Our competitive juniors have a full calendar of events to attend over the summer season and do very well. We have a small team of passionate high schoolers as well as 20+yrs athletes who have a lot of medals to show for their hard work and dedication. Follow their success on our facebook page.
Our juniors train hard across all the track and field disciplines in a fun environment. If your child/ren love a bit of competition, there are plenty of events on offer through our affiliation with Southland Athletics. They also offer our competitive athletes eligibility for selection to their rep teams and invite our members to attend specialised coaching sessions with their clubs.

Join our committee: Our club is run entirely by volunteers and a very small group at that. If you are interested in being on the committee, please make contact with us. We'd be very happy to welcome you on board.

JUNIORS
Our Junior athletics club for ages 7 - 14 yrs, enjoy social club sessions over school terms during summer months. Training is from 4pm - 5.30pm on Tuesdays starting in October (first week of term 4) at the Queenstown Events Centre on the field beside the hockey turf. We will run 2 x Open Days at the start of each season to give it a try before you sign up. Thereafter Tuesday sessions will be at the same time every Tuesday of term 4 and term 1. The focus is to introduce a range of disciplines in a fun learning environment, recording times and distances and improving on overall athletic skills. We rely heavily on parent volunteers to hold these sessions so we ask parents to commit to this at time of signing up. All cancellations, communications and notifications are updated on our facebook page queenstownathletic
JUNIOR COMPETITIVE ATHLETICS
There are fabulous opportunities for kids who like to compete. Our competitive athletes are affiliated with Southland Athletics and are invited to join their inter-club weekend meets that take place in Invercargill at Surrey Park. They also get the opportunity for selection into the REP team which includes further competitions within NZ. If your child is keen to compete, ask us more.
WINTER X-COUNTRY TRAINING
This winter we trialled X-country training for juniors. Meets took place on Monday afternoons at 4pm at the Queenstown Event Centre beside the hockey turf. This was well supported and we will continue it next winter. X-country training is included in your yearly membership. If you are not a member and only want to take part in X-country, a $50 fee will be charged. Please contact our Club Secretary directly to sign up.

WE LOVE OUR VOLUNTEERS! Unlike other sports, junior athletics is dependent on the active participation of parents. Our parent helpers are integral to helping our club sessions run smoothly so we request one parent or caregiver from each family to volunteer their help at these sessions. Depending on numbers, your help may only be needed a few times a term but if you are available for more, let us know as the more parents involved, the more efficiently we can run these club sessions. Parents are not expected to coach and do not need to be athletic. Full instructions and direction will be provided. The role for parents (or grandparents if they wish!) will involve: + Setting up and packing down of equipment + Managing a small group of children in one or two development games on social training nights + Timing/measuring and recording relevant results. Participating in these parent-help roles gives parents a good understanding of each discipline and what we are aiming to achieve.
CANCELLATIONS Unless you hear otherwise, training sessions will be ON. You will be notified by 2pm through our Facebook page (Queenstown Athletics) if we need to cancel due to bad weather. If no notice is up on Facebook, please presume that the club meeting is still ON. Please don't message us on Facebook if there is no message, no message means it's ON.
